  1. The Salt Lick: You can smell our pits from here…
The Salt Lick is a highly regarded BBQ restaurant and considered by many as one of the best in the country. Salt Lick is one of the few BBQ establishments that has open BBQ pit located inside of it’s facility. So you are able to watch as the pitmasters work their magic. When in Austin, this is truly an experience you must not miss out on.

The Salt Lick opened to the public in 1969 by Thurman Roberts, Sr. and his wife Hisako T. Roberts.[1] The Salt Lick quickly grew in popularity and went from being open just a few times a year to seven days a week. Roberts and Hisako built the Salt Lick restaurant on the ranch where he was born, using locally-quarried limestone rocks to create the original and main restaurant building. Hisako’s Hawaiian heritage inspired the sweet barbecue sauce used in the restaurant.

The Salt Lick’s primary cuisine is beef (brisket-Salt Licks claim to fame), sausage, and pork ribs. chicken and turkey are also served. Merchandise is available from the restaurant itself or via mail order, and includes t-shirts, koozies and hats, as well as the restaurant’s trademark sauces and dry rub. The Salt Lick is currently owned by Scott Roberts and his wife Susan “Susie” Roberts; they have one daughter named Maile.

Salt Lick has been previewed in many culinary television shows and on “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” (Food Network) Bobby Flay and Guy Fieri both named Salt Lick as their favorite BBQ joint.

  3. LA GLORIA ICE HOUSE
    100 East Grayson
    San Antonio, TX 78215

Ok, so I try not to bash restaurants in my blog. La Gloria has very nice scenery and seems to be very busy (it was packed when I visited there). Unfortunately, that’s the only positive things I can say about this place. I had two dishes, the tacos al pastor, which claims to be “thin slices of marinated pork that have been spit roasted and served with pineapple, onions & cilantro”. The pork was actually diced and I am not too sure how it was “marinated” but had no flavor on it’s own. I could tell it was reheated on a flat top and nothing is worse than reheated pork. The three salsas which came with both dishes lwere equally as bland.

I aslo tried the Tacos Bistec…just read above for the same critique. La Gloria clames to be the “street food of mexico”. I have been all over Mexico and the street food is my favorite of any cuisine. La Gloria does not come close. Do your self a favor and save your money and go to Taco Cabana.
